One of the most notable poems is In Response to Executive Order 9066 by Dwight Okita which narrates about the internment of Americans of Japanese origin. The poem is based on the child perspective since the narrator- due to her age, cannot understand the consequences of the internment. The tomato seeds in the poem symbolize love and hope. The child narrator believes that an amicable solution will be found to forge a peaceful coexistence formula between the Japanese aliens and American whites. The short story Persepolis by MarJane Satrapi documents about the child’s experience during the armed struggle in Iran. The author seems to be urging the society to maintain peace at all costs in order to avoid the destructions occasioned by war.

The poem has vivid but very powerful messages. The young girl recounts about her experience when the Japanese Americans were being relocated into camps. “I am a fourteen- year-old girl with bad spelling a messy room” (Okita). This line symbolizes the attitude of the girl since she has been adopted during the better part of her life. The speaker then responded by giving Denise some tomato seeds. The tomato seeds symbolize hope, calm and peace. The speaker believes that she will be able to reunite with her best friend when the tomato seeds blossoms. In this light, it is relevant that the relocation of the Japanese into camps means war while the tomato seeds symbolize peace. Perspelis by MarJane Satrapi Persepolis is a young girl’s account narrating how her experience on how it feels like being raised in Iran during the post 9/11.

From her child perspective, the narrator is not able to understand what is happening in her country but her comical illustrations are all based on the theme of politics and warfare (Taylor 1). The story reveals that Iran’s political atmosphere is so volatile thus exposing the country into warfare. The politicians are greedy and they only care about themselves and their immediate family members. They don’t care about the state of the country since the war does not affect their lifestyle. They promise a lot of good things when campaigning but they implement non upon assuming office. In the Persepolis the theme of politics and warfare reveals how politicians breach the peace and setup the country for war due to their selfish interests.
