Name Instructor Course Date Comparison of Computer Operating Systems Introduction The operating system in a computer is the link/translator between the application software and the computer hardware. According to Olivix (2014) it manages the computer resources by acting as a caretaker which provides and executes services for the application software. This paper will compare and contrast the different features of the three different computer operating systems namely; Microsoft Windows Linux TM and Mac TM OS. It is the features such as the functionality of the processors the compatibility and type of hardware/software protocol that determine the choice of an operating system by the user. The three computer operating systems will be compared on features such as machine and peripheral management security customizability support connectivity of other portable media stability cost and reliability. Comparison On the subject of machine and component management Microsoft windows systems totally control all the components against viruses. The UNIX based OS Mac and Linux have the best security feature compared to windows which is vulnerable to viruses. Reliability It experiences a lot of crashing especially when a lot of programs run concurrently or whenever execution errors arise. This OS does not crash runs for a long time without the need for rebooting. The security features ascertain its un-interrupted performance. It is not vulnerable to viruses and the bespoke software and hardware is designed by the same team who put up the OS. Linux and Mac are more reliable than Windows which is susceptible to bugs and can crash anytime.
