She was not his first wife but the most favorite to him. It is located in Agra, India on the Southern side of the Yamuna River. It covers approximately forty-two acres of land and it took around twenty-two years for it to be completed. The architects were collected from all over the Mughal empire and some from Persia especially the main builders known by the names Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, Ustad Isa Khan Effendi and Ismail Khan. It contains a mosque, gardens, a main gate, a rest house and the actual tomb itself. The gardens in the Taj Mahal represent serenity and peace of Islam in the Mughal empire and they were very important to the emperors as they denoted the grace and refinement of the Mughal empire.
The Persian features in the Taj Mahal artwork include the Persian inspired garden that are mostly walled. The gardens of the Taj Mahal artwork also symbolize paradise as they are filled with abundant flowers, trees and plants with a river separating them. According to Noguès (n. p), the craftsmen of the Taj Mahal were very many thus only a few are known. According to history, the area was not populated by Muslims, thus provided a labor force that was not accustomed to Islamic style. However, the structure was built under Muslim artists’ direction and that is the reason for the entwined vegetation, the dome of lotus and the lapidary marquetry work blend Islamic and Hindu art (Noguès, n. p).
