Work Breakdown Structure Name: Institution: Work Breakdown Structure Project management involves several tasks. These tasks include the planning the implementation and the control of the project to achieve the predefined goals. Most of these tasks fall under the project manager. Most projects are complex in nature and they need a set of tools which can divide the seemingly complex project into smaller implementable and manageable ‘sub-projects’. The approach used to do this is the work breakdown structure (WBS). WBS is hierarchical in nature. This implies that the structure is formed by breaking the whole project into smaller implementable packages which are then divided to form even smaller tasks. This means that WBS starts at the top and decomposes the whole project into smaller parts and units. It can therefore be said to be an inverted tree structure which branches to form smaller tasks and activities. The divided units capture team involved with the making of the WBS should adhere to set design principles in order to make an effective WBS. A good WBS should cover all the details and the scope of the project be based on deliverables and not activities and have reasonable work packages. The activities should also not be duplicated. The WBS should be analyzed and issues such as the critical path and the risk path identified. References Burke R. (2013). Project management: planning and control techniques. New Jersey USA.
