Name: Francisca Kessie Instructor's Name: Dr. Melvin Earnest Course: English 1302 Date: November 13th 2017 Title: ANALYSIS OF MENDING WALL POEM (BY ROBERT FROST) The title “Mending Wall” has a dual meaning that encapsulates my interpretation of the poem. For one “mending” represents emotions and feelings that are being resolved or fixed to form that wall. For another the wall also appears to be that barrier that divides people and consequently prevents emotions and feelings from being expressed. This poem conveys a universal message about how humans tend to build “walls” in relationships for our interests of getting hurt and also wanting our own space. This wall that we build occasionally has to be brought down to allow for us to get closer to others as we build relationships and within these same relationships the walls have to be built again once we encounter some distrust or simply just and 37 the narrator pictures in his mind some of the thoughts and questions that his neighbor might have in case he raises questions concerning the necessity of the wall between them (Davis 292). The reality of the narrator and that of his neighbor contrast sharply. These contrasting realities give rise to the different views and themes that are exhibited in this poem such as isolation versus community old versus new and tradition versus innovation among others. In conclusion a complete analysis of this poem reveals that there is need for building walls and the narrator’s behavior naturally asserts that assumption. Bibliography Davis M.
