American neighborhoods

This is an argument essay.... The topic of my essay is the effects of living in American societies. This is my question at issue: Do the neighborhoods Americans grow up in effect them positively or negatively in long term, and how? Here is my working thesis: Despite all neighborhoods being different, the culture and people from one’s hometown are the key elements that shape and develop characteristics for children starting at a young age. I'm supposed to have 6 different sources and here are 5 that I've chosen myself... Brooks-Gun, Jeanne. “Neighborhood Poverty, Volume 1: Context and Consequences for Children.” Russell Sage Foundation. Russell Sage Foundation. 6 Nov. 1997. Print. 11 May 2016. Brooks-Gun writes in her book that studies are attempting to illustrate the combined effects of individual, family, and community characteristics developing children and adolescents. Her belief that neighborhoods cause an outcome in personality relates to the development of future America. Implying, the youth of the United States is learning from everything that is taking place around them. With social media playing a massive role in the country today, Brooks-Gun thinks these forms of news need to be regulated by parents. In fact, she even states that communities weight on children is now lessening slowly because of the weight social media has taken on America’s youth. Role models have grown more so through the internet than in neighborhoods as a whole, according to Brooks-Gun. Gilbert, Dennis. “The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality.” An Imprint of Sage Publications, Inc. An Imprint of Sage Publication, Inc. 13 May 2010. Print. 20 May 2016. In this book, Gilbert focuses on the socioeconomic core of the class systems in American society. He believes that neighborhoods effect the class of families everyday in a much more aggressive way than any other factors. Gilbert points out that because people are forced to be around their neighbors frequently, this causes them to become complacent in the lifestyle they live daily. He also mentions that the class people are in limits the ability for families to move out of impoverished areas; which in Gilbert’s words are mainly populated with more children who have bad characters than any other place. Grannis, Rick. “From the Ground Up: Translating Geography into Community through Neighborhood Networks.” American Journal of Sociology. American Journal of Sociology. 12 Nov. 2015. Print. 10 May 2016. In Rick Grannis book, social capital and collective efficacy are said to only take place in certain neighborhoods in the United States, but not all. From the Ground Up debates that neighborhood’s communities emerge from the cliques made inside of those neighborhoods. The relationship between neighbors is the one of the biggest factors in the way that people in the neighborhoods act, and it is solely geographic. Grannis argues that this directly effects the children from the neighborhood, simply because of the connections between their parents. There were also studies done on families who relocate to other, safer neighborhoods, and Grannis believes this has a correlation with the outcome of peoples attitudes and personalities. Johansson, Frans. “Medici Effect: What Elephants and Epidemics Can Teach Us about Innovation.” Harvard Business Review Press. Harvard Business Review Press. 1 October 2006. Print. 12 May 2016. Johansson takes a more universal view on community in his book Medici Effect. He uses Zimbabwe as an example of effects culture has on people’s personalities, which relates with what is thought to be socially acceptable. Johansson also compares Zimbabwe with the United States, stating that citizens in America are allowed more leeway with the way that they represent themselves, as opposed to the more strict rules the people of Zimbabwe live by. In fact, he even goes on to say that he believes if the United States followed more of an orderly society, we would have a much more orderly communities. Johansson’s points about culture described what his definition of a successful group of people should look like. Munger, Richard. “Changing Children’s Behavior by changing the PEOPLE, PLACES, and ACTIVITIES in their live.” Boys Town Press. Boys Town Press. 15 August 2005. Print. 11 May 2016. In this book, Munger claims that the environments in which a child lives, plays, and studies are more important than personality, when it comes to shaping a child's behavior. Meaning, those people, places, and activities the child is surrounded by have a huge impact on his or her overall behavior. Munger diagnoses this view with something he calls, “behavior settings” which identifies home, neighborhood, school, after-school, electronic, friends, work, faith, recreation and leisure, and sports as the places a child will spend the majority of their time. Each of these ten behavior settings motivate children in a different way, which is very important for parents to realize, according to Munger. This paper should be 5 pages long with a works cited, and everything should be in MLA Format... Thank you so much for your help!!!
