Current Issues in Ocean Pollution
Document Type:Research Paper
Subject Area:Other
The term micro plastic has been defined to referring to small plastic particles which have accumulated in the oceans over long periods of time they are usually very tiny and can only be detected through the sampling of small portions of ocean water. However, there are plastics that can easily be identified through the naked eyes in the same oceans. These are mostly found deep in the waters. The effects that they bring about are very serious and have been taken into account by environmentalist. For some reason, the pollution caused by plastic in the oceans have not been considered such a serious issue in the past. This is so far one of the causes of the buildup. When plastic is not properly disposed of, it is obvious that they will find their way into water bodies.
At the same time, there are people who just dump them into the water bodies that lead into the oceans at the end of the day. The Pacific Ocean alone has a lot of microplastic particles which has become one of the many serious challenges it faces currently. In the next 10 years, it is expected that the levels of plastic build up in the Pacific Ocean will go up and may even double (Eriksen, Maximenko, Thiel, Cummins, Lattin, Wilson, Rifman, 2013). Sometimes, it translates into the death of such animals and this is the reason as to why certain marine animals are becoming so instinct over the years (Jambeck, Geyer, Wilcox, Siegler, Perryman, Andrady & Law, 2015). It is approximated that within the next few years, certain species will not be heard of anymore.
