Comparison of Literary Devices in The Story of an Hour and The Storm

The device is used in “The Story of an Hour,” to uncover the truth about radicalism and lack of liberty to married women and those curbed to their homes. On the other hand, Kate in “The Storm” uses various devices such as symbolism, irony, setting and plot either similarly or differently to show the theme of love, feminism and morality issues that most couples around the world on daily basis. For instance, in “The Storm,” Kate in “The Story of an Hour” portrays how individuals are confined in unfertile and doubtful veracity because of other’s recklessness and power. Being linked with the present-day society’s belief, the Chopin’s sensation and opinions can be understood. For instance, Mallard in her work of writing is victim and messenger of the story.

For example, she sleeps with Alce, yet they are not married, and she knows it is an offense. This sounds unexpected as she understands that adultery is wrong both from the bible and according to the society and family norms. For example, towards the end, Calixta and Alce are both happier with their partners after their act of adultery. Kate Chopin therefore successfully manages to express the situational irony in her writing by expressing the untruth feeling of both characters in the two articles. This is because Mallard, for instance, appears to be crying over her husband’s demise yet we all understand that she is happy because of the freedom that she had long been denied since marriage. This is because she was now relieved and she knew that it was the beginning of her long-denied freedom.

As Chopin writes, “The delightful smell of shower was in the midair. ” The pleasant breath according to Chopin is used to signify freedom to Louise. Symbolism is henceforth a significant style of writing that uses various aspects to exhibit significant meaning to the reader. For example, Kate uses the spring time to indicate a new life and new hope after Mallard husband’s death. The two married and lived a happy life all changing their past life. As seen from the texts, Alce used to hide their relationship with Calixta, which was seen as adultery and now decide to bury the past and marry Clarissa. As written by Kate Chopin, “So the storm passed, and everyone was indeed happy. ” For example, as indicated by Kate, Calixta is happy seing her husband and son happy after the storm was over.
