The people in the cave had gone to explore until the tragedy struck as a high tide brought water into the cave and the levels were rising fast. The fat man who squeezed out of the cave and got stuck was probably the first one to get to the escape route and in his desire to avoid drowning tried to go out. In my opinion the fat man did not consider the lives of the others since he tried to get out first. He did not evaluate the situation completely and was in a rush to escape danger. Squeezing out would have saved his life were it not for the fact that he challenges the thinking of people on the principles to be considered in the killing. The legal and judicial systems have put in place laws which protect human life even in the case where the moral motivation to save more lives exceeds the motivation to save one individual. The principle by Brandt is challenged and critiqued in various aspects since it overlooks an individual’s rights and the laws of nature and common sense. The situation may have different solutions apart from killing one individual and hence a proper discussion should be carried out before action is taken. The law of utilitarianism should be considered only when there is a greater value to be achieved by taking away the life of an individual. The principles and decisions presented in the case of the cavers are complex but should be fully analyzed in order to understand the results of either action taken. [...]
