Document Type:Research Paper
Subject Area:Nursing
For older adult especially those suffering from dementia, UTIs may lead to behavioral symptoms like confusion. According to Rowe, and JUthani-Mehta (2013), older women are likely to get UTIs than their male counterparts because they have shorter urethras than those of men. With the elderly population on the rise, the burden of UTI among this population is expected to increase thus calling for the need to improve the diagnostic, management as well as prevention strategies essential in improving the health outcomes of older adults. The solution to UTIs among older adults thus lies in the improvement of the diagnosis, management, and prevention measures. According to Bardsley (2017), antibiotics are used to treat victims of UTIs with the amoxicillin and nitrofurantoin the most prescribed.
Additionally, treatment of UTI represents 30 percent to 50 percent when it comes to using antibiotics signifying that there are a higher cost associated with the infections. The condition of UTI is influenced by aging as aging disrupts the body immunity leading to dysfunction of the T-Cell leading to presence of bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli. The primary intervention measure involves diagnosis for UTIs where a simple urinalysis is conducted. According to Bardsley (2017), a person suspected to suffer from UTI is subjected to a urine culture that aims at determining the bacteria that has caused the infection to help in prescribing the best antibiotic to treat it. Amoxicillin and nitrofurantoin is the most common antibiotic used in treating UTIs. e884 Genao, L. , & Buhr, G.
