In Antigua, the government ministers own brothels, make broker illegal deals, and also steal the public funds. Despite knowing the issue, the general public in Antigua is not concerned with the issue. They see it as a normal way of life in the region. Kincaid attributes the corruption menace to the general nature of the Antiguan’s passivity but also sees that their attitude emanated from the lessons learned from the Antiguan history. During the colonization, Antigua was colonized by the British who claimed to be bringing civilization but in reality exploiting the Antiguans. The poor in the society languish in poverty while the government officials are driving big cars and enjoying all sort of life luxury. This is an absurd situation.
