Domestic violence incidences have been known to occur between couples, regardless of whether they are married or not. However, there clearly exists a difference in the number, causes and reasons for violence among married couples in comparison to unmarried couples. However, detailed research on the violence problem has for a long time been lacking. Philly Domestic violence analysis has however tried to bridge the gap in the understanding of domestic violence. According to the study, there are more cases of violence among unmarried couples compared to married couples. It is worth noting that most of the unmarried couples are also young and probably started dating at a young age. The problem of attitude comes about as married couples have very different attitude towards marriage as compared to unmarried partners.

The difference in attitude translates to a different way of solving problems between them and consequently, a different way of handling conflict. (Hornik, 1999) The problem of attitude can be explained in terms of the couple’s long term vision. Although not all, most married partners acknowledge that they are in the relationship to stay.
