Subject Area:History

Document 1

Traders lured fellow Africans with gifts which switched their allegiance to the brotherhood. As a result, kings and other prominent leaders fell into the trap and began castigating war among communities to acquire captives who later became slaves. Other likely victims were the king’s subjects who also found themselves enslaved. Sadly, English merchants transported close to a hundred thousand Africans annually overseas out of which thirty thousand were liable to die as a result of mistreatment. As the author indicated, the slave trade was due to lack of conscience as most of its pro-supporters engaged in violence and murder for no apparent reason. He reiterated that as opposed to what happened in Africa, the act of slavery in other countries only targeted serial offenders who had gone through imprisonment.
