In the episode, Lacie (Bryce Dallas) is depicted as a young woman who is obsessed with her ratings. She attains the chance to increase her scores significantly and shift to into a considerably luxurious home. This is after being selected by her childhood friend (Alice Eve) to become the maid of honor during her wedding. Throughout the episode, Lacie is portrayed as having been led by her obsession with certain forms of mishaps throughout her wedding which leads to a rapid decline in her decline. 1 This paper, through the episode of Nosedive in the Black Mirror, seeks to present the technology of ratings, its positives, and what it teaches people about their best and worst as human beings. 3 The new rating would help her to obtain a discount to get a luxury apartment.

She lives with her brother Ryan, who does not show interest in the ratings. She consults an expert who informs her that she should seek the favor of highly-rated individuals since the latter has significant impacts on scores. She, therefore, decides to take a photograph of a teddy bear that she had made together with the highly-rated Naomi. She is happy when Naomi rates the photo five stars and informs her that she should become her maid of honor during Naomi’s wedding. However, Lacie sneaks into the wedding when the celebratory dinner is ongoing. She, later on, grabs the microphone, begins giving the speech she had prepared, but gets aggressive and threatens to kill Mr. Rags. 5 The people at the wedding rate her negatively, and her ratings decrease to below one star.

Afterward, she is taken to jail, the technology supporting the rating system removed from her eyes. Individuals would end up fearing to say certain things. In this case, people may fail to criticize or speak their minds when they are not pleased by specific occurrences in the community. 7 This is based on the perspective that since people know that if they talk in a manner which does not please other people, they might be rated poorly. It would, therefore, make people become slaves of their behavior in that they cannot correct particular actions in the community for fear of dropping their ratings.
