May 11--The Sacramento Opera's latest production of Puccini's "La Boheme" is so winsome that you sit in your seat rooting for it at every turn like you would a racehorse on which you've bet the rent. But the payout with this "Boheme" is not a big one save for a standout performance by soprano NaGuanda Nobles in the role of Mimi. What was mostly missing Friday evening at the Community Center Theater was strong singing that could be easily heard above the overdriven orchestra. Fortunately this production ambitious as in Act III where Hudson had Mimi and Rodolfo and Musetta and Marcello play their intimate moments simultaneously in an extremely visual manner. The latter couple was placed on a second level. Although this was an interesting viewpoint for those sitting in orchestra seats it is likely some of the action was lost on those in the balcony. In the end it was Nobles' appearance in this production that was memorable. Her radiant soprano portends a bright career and it elevated this production from the ordinary. [...]
