Persuasive Speech

To persuade my audience that maintaining mental health is just as important as maintaining physical health Persuasive Speech Assignment Assignment Overview: For this assignment, you will present a 7-9 minute Persuasive Speech. The purpose of this speech is to persuade the audience to your point of view on a particular public controversy. You should choose a controversial topic that has real public impact and is currently and actively being debated on a local, national, or international level. Examples of possible topics will be discussed in class. The purpose of this speech is to persuade, not simply to argue a point. And in doing so, you should assume that your audience is going to be a difficult one to win over (assume from the outset that they may disagree with you). While you may be logical in your approach, you must also keep in mind that logic does not always sway people to change their views. Therefore, you must attempt to analyze your audience and understand what the likely impediments may be, identify ways in which these audience members may be moved to change their views, and speak to what you believe are shared interests.Although you may not be able to completely sway those who disagree with your view, you should be able to present a speech that is convincing enough to at least make them reconsider their oppositional views and at least be in a better position to sympathize with your position. You must present yourself as a credible authority and persuade your audience in an ethical and convincing way, not merely through logic or emotion alone.Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to learn to use your voice to address a significant problem in your world. Ideally, your persuasive speech will build on the framework laid in your informative speech. If your topics are not related, you will not be docked points. You will need to be more sensitive to time, however, as you will have more ground to cover in your persuasive speech. The persuasive speech must identify a problem, propose a plan that solves the problem, and state benefits of implementing the policy (i.e. use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence). Your advocacy should be detailed and workable. You must use at least two visual aids during your presentation. The speech will be graded on content and delivery. You will be timed, so promote a policy that can be thoroughly and effectively argued within the 7-9 minutes. SOURCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY: You must use at least five reputable, reliable, and current sources. You must cite sources in the body of your speech. Include a bibliography in your Speech Outliner, in APA or MLA format. EXAMPLES: You must provide at least two examples that convincingly persuade your audience of the issue at stake and its implications to society. TIME: Your speech should be between 7-9 minutes. You will have a 30 second over/under leeway, after which I will deduct points for each 30 seconds you go beyond (so if your speech is less than 6 1/2 minutes or more than 9 1/2 minutes, I will start deducting points). ORGANIZATION: Your speech must be organized into 4 – 5 main sections using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. DELIVERY: You will be graded on delivery. Do not read your speech. GRADING: The persuasive speech comprises 300 points and is worth 20 percent of your final grade. Your content and delivery scores will be averaged and assigned a point value. Each item will be graded on a 1-5 Likert-type scale with the following values: 1=Insufficient 2=Below Average 3=Fulfills requirement 4=Excellent 5=Superb Some useful suggestions for doing well on this assignment: Select a topic for which you feel passionate, possess a depth of knowledge about, and that is truly controversial. You would not, for instance, want to attempt to persuade your audience that child abuse is bad (no one would likely disagree with this); but you could attempt to persuade your audience that parental spanking should be considered child abuse. Avoid self-defensive persuasion – arguments that are made in the spirit of “This is what I believe and if you believe otherwise, you are just wrong!” These tend to occur most frequently when students are particularly passionate about a topic – but so much so that they fail to deliver convincing examples, logic, and evidence. Such arguments and attempts at persuasion also tend to put your audience members on the defensive. While you are to assume your audience members are likely to disagree with you (so that you approach this speech ready to truly persuade), you do not want to assume that they will be hostile, or else you risk being on the attack. And it’s hard to persuade anyone of anything when they feel attacked. Use logos, pathos, and ethos. Don’t get so lost in your research that you merely regurgitate every fact or statistic you find. This is not helpful. We are persuaded by facts and statistics, but we are also persuaded by examples that show the human impact of your argument. Use appropriate language choices. Don’t speak to your audience members in such a way as to highlight them as opposition (i.e. “I know you all disagree with me, but . . . “). You are trying to get the audience to understand your position and its benefits; and to do so, you want to emphasize that you are on the same side (in the larger picture of human and social needs and the “greater good”). You should therefore use language that legitimates their position, but encourages the possibility for compromise and agreement. This is why persuading is harder than arguing. Get off the cards. While card reading is always discouraged, it tends to be more heavily leaned upon in the persuasive speech, probably because you will have more evidence in your persuasive speech than in others. Regardless, while there may be a few phrases or facts that you have to get just right (and therefore use the cards), your use of cards at this point should be minimal. attached includes an example of a speech that received an A, guidelines, as well as the outline template that should be used
