Name: Young Cho Professor`s Name: Program: Subject: Subject code: May 3 2017 Topic: Origin of Japanese Koto and its use today Introduction Koto is traditional musical instrument made of strings that had its original roots in China. The original koto instrument was composed of 5 attached strings the number of strings then increased to 7 followed by a 12 string one and then to 13 strings. The 12 string instrument was the one that was introduced to Japan in the centuries of between 7th and 8th where the number was raised to 13 strings (Johnson Henry Mabley pg14). The instrument became very well-known at the time of the Japanese period of Nara where it was used as a court musical instrument. With the change in time the instrument continued to attract popularity from many Japanese people where it was used during Buddhism ritual performances until a time when the that are particularly designed to teach the present day youths on how to play and use the koto instrument. This has helped in the spread of the Japanese traditional music and musical instruments into the western culture (Johnson Henry Mabley).
