Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date The relationship between autonomy and privacy within the workplace Privacy and autonomy within the workplace have become an ethical challenge in the contemporary world. Different moral perspectives have arisen today in the working world concerning the relevance of autonomy and privacy in the workplace. Most people either support or question the balance between autonomy and transparency in the relationship between the employers and the employees. The several questions that have been asked in the job place today revolve around the relationship between autonomy and privacy in places of work what kinds of personal information the employees should share with their employers and which ones should they conceal from them. Another question we seek to answer is what sorts of information the employers should disclose to their employees and which ones should they conceal from them (Lippke 466). Though different scholars have tried to jobs more than the firms are desperate for them. Workers are therefore rarely in a position to bargain with their employers since they know someone is always there to take their jobs. This therefore impacts negatively on the employee’s privacy and autonomy since employees always strive to please their employers to keep their job (Blanpain et al. 53). Order Description:

Topic: What is the relationship between autonomy and privacy within the workplace? What kinds of personal information do employees have an obligation to reveal to their employers? What kinds of information do the employers have an obligation to reveal to their employees? Learning Goal: To further your understanding of the ethical challenges that arise within the business workplace by critically analyzing different moral perspectives on the balance between autonomy and transparency in employer-employee relationships. Instructions: 1. You should begin by reading Chs. 8 and 9 from the textbook, making sure you familiarize yourself with the main concepts and terminology. 2. After finished reading, you should use the concepts from Chs. 8 and 9 to write an essay that critically analyzes “Work, Privacy, and Autonomy,” by Richard Lippke (Case 9.2 in the textbook, pp. 466-472). 3. More specifically, you should be sure to answer the following questions: (a) What is Lippke’s main conclusion regarding privacy and autonomy in the workplace? (b) What is the strongest argument Lippke’s offers to support his conclusion? (c) What is best objection against Lippke’s argument? (d1) If you’re convinced by Lippke’s strongest argument, why doesn’t the objection undermine Lippke’s conclusion? How should Lippke respond? or (d2) If you’re unconvinced by Lippke’s strongest argument, what is Lippke’s best response to the objection? And why do you think the response is unpersuasive? 4. While you are brainstorming prior to writing the first draft of your essay, it will help if you reflect on the following questions (adapted from the textbook, p. 472), which we will all discuss together during class over the next two weeks: (i) Lippke maintains that privacy is valuable because of its relation to autonomy and (following Joseph Kupfer) highlights two ways in which privacy contributes to autonomy. Explain the connections between privacy and autonomy. Do you agree that autonomy is the reason privacy is valuable? (ii) Relying on a contractual model of employer-employee relations, some writers like DesJardins and Duska use the concept of job relevance to restrict the information employers may justifiably gather about employees. What are Lippke’s reasons for rejecting this approach? Are you persuaded by his arguments? (iii) By contrast with the contractual model, what are Lippke’s reasons both for opposing employers’ acquiring certain sorts of information and for objecting to certain methods of gathering it? (iv) Do you agree with Lippke that there is a grave imbalance in power between employers and employees and that the workplace is characterized by authoritarian management structures that deprive employees of much of their autonomy? What are implications of viewing privacy rights in this context? (v) How does Lippke respond to the argument that the property rights of owners and stockholders should take precedence over the rights of employees? Do you agree that the existing organization of work contributes significantly to problems like drug use and dishonestly? Formatting Requirements: • 6 – 6.5 pages, excluding title page and references • Double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman • 1” margins
