Cognitive Assignment

Controversies in Neuroscience Paper In this course, you will find that many open questions remain in cognitive neuroscience. In fact, cognitive neuroscience has historically been driven by active debate. In this paper, your job is to summarize and critically analyze the pieces of scientific evidence that support opposing viewpoints. I have listed three controversies in cognitive neuroscience below. Follow these steps: 1. Pick ONE controversy. 2. Read the four journal articles that are listed for that controversy. Two articles will be in support of one side of the controversy, and the other two articles will be in support of the opposing viewpoint. 3. In Section I of your paper, begin by introducing the nature of the debate. Then, clearly and concisely summarize the four journal articles. Your summaries should include the following information: What was the overarching goal of the experiment? What was the researcher(s)’ hypothesis? How did they test the question? What did they find? What questions were left unanswered by their experiment? a. To fully understand an empirical article, you will need to read it several times. b. Once you understand each experiment, you should be able to answer all of the questions above without looking at the paper (in fact, that is how I strongly recommend you write your summaries!). c. Tip: If you are including numbers or the names of statistical tests in your summaries, they are not concise enough. 4. Also in Section I of your paper, you should make connections between the four articles. Avoid making Section I read like a laundry list of individual summaries. Use transitions between the summaries. For example: How do the two papers on each side of the debate relate to one another? Does one answer questions left open by the other? How do the papers on either side of the debate relate to one another? How are their approaches to answering their questions similar? Different? 3 5. In Section II of your paper, provide a critical analysis of the debate. Which side has the strongest experimental evidence? What are your critiques of the viewpoint that you feel is weaker? a. Note that I will not give credit to any “low hanging fruit” critiques like low numbers of participants or only using college students. Those types of comments apply to almost any empirical paper you will ever read, and thus are not substantive or specific to the debates at hand. 6. To further support your argument in Section II, you must find an additional two empirical papers (NOT review articles) that were published during or after 2014. Summarize those papers and discuss how their evidence supports your viewpoint. What were the strengths of the papers? How did they improve on the methodologies or interpretations of the papers you summarized in Section I? How did they address some of the questions left open by the papers in Section I? 7. Finally, take a moment to put yourself in the shoes of an opposing viewpoint holder: What are some possible critiques of this more recent research? How would you respond to those possible critiques? 8. Nitty-gritty mechanics of the paper: a. A printed copy (double-sided is fine) is due in class on Monday, April 24. b. Double-spaced c. 1-inch margins d. 12 pt Times New Roman font e. Include page numbers f. 8-10 pages g. APA format (use the Purdue OWL as a resource) for citations h. No direct quotes. Part of APA format is writing everything in your own words. I will automatically deduct 5 points for every instance of a direct quote. i. Any instances of pl
