Order Description:

1) Choose a topic in which they are interested. Be creative!! The world is an amazing place, and unbelievable things (some fun, some tragic) happen around us all the time. Make sure your topic has a geographic angle that you can pursue, otherwise it probably won't be a good topic for a geography class! 2) Find some newspaper articles on your topic. Note that I said newspaper articles - not Wikipedia pages, online encyclopedia pages, not blog entries. Steer clear of obviously biased sources - there are one or two of those on the internet! Make sure your topic is relatively current, so that your articles are current, too! To do a good job, you'll need a minimum of three articles, but four or five will help you develop your article more fully. 3) Write your journal assignment - Take the major themes from your articles and weave them together into a narrative. Tell me a story about your topic, based on what you learned from reading your articles. This is not just an exercise in summarizing the articles, one after another (you won't get any points for that). It's OK to have an opinion in your journal, but make sure that it isn't just your opinions (This is where it's VERY important to use unbiased sources. Don't just pick sources that reinforce your opinion, especially if they're highly biased!). 4) Cite your sources!!!! - There's a reason I four exclamation points after that sentence! You need to cite your sources, both in the text and in a "References Cited" section at the end of your journal. If you do not cite your sources, you will not receive any points for your work, and if you deliberately plagiarize material you could even fail the course. If you don't understand what plagiarism is - go to this website (Links to an external site.) to learn more. I'm not overly concerned with which citation style you use, I just want you to be consistent (use one style through the whole journal, like APA, MLA, Turabian, etc.). Here's a link to a guide (Links to an external site.) that will help you cite things correctly. Try to be creative and have some fun with this assignment. I can tell you, from experience, it's not an assignment you can do in one night, so give yourself some time to complete if you're going to give it a shot. As always, if you have any questions about this assignment, please let me know!
