American Healthcare System Essay

The underlying principles of the American health care system are commendable, but there exist cracks and inconsistencies in the institutions and stakeholders involved in this process. It is ironical that the system fails in the very objectives of equity and access that it sets out to achieve. The government should however be applauded for the introduction of insurance mechanisms such as Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP to serve the vulnerable members of society. I agree with Shi and Singh (2015) that this multiple paying system can be confusing and cumbersome and there is need for a more streamlined all-in-one inclusive system. It is not surprising that the health care system has evolved with technology revolution as most industries in North America. In my opinion Shi and Singh (2015) is right on the biomedical model of US healthcare system that focuses on treatment of illnesses through treating the symptoms and providing temporary relief and not a holistic view of health and medicine.
