Technology can also be applied in the practice of manual arts and skills (Duffy, 2013). Social Change This can be defined as any considerable change that occurs in a given period of time in terms of the behavior patterns, values and cultural norms in human beings. Sociologists have presented social change as any significant alteration hence indicating that social change brings up some profound consequences in peoples social life. Social changes that have occurred are in terms of industrial revolution, the rise of the feminist movement and the abolition of slave trade and slavery (Smelser, 2013). Relationship between technology and social change There exists a relationship between technology and social change since the digital tools have been a key factor in the creation of societies.

Computers have been very helpful when it comes to organizing and processing data since the days of civilization. Computers were used during the period of industrial revolution in the calculation of difficult and repetitive equations (Oldham, 2015). As time went by, the computers became powerful, cheaper and smaller and they are currently found with almost every literate person or in every modern area. Most applications that we encounter in our daily life are usually run by the computer. For instance, cars use the computer to tune the engine and also control the anti-locking braking system. However, whatever is important and that which must dominate is stability and balance. Some critics have however come out to argue that technological innovations have resulted to imbalance in the changes that are taking place in the world today.

Digital Divide in relation to social and technological change When we talk of the digital divide, we are referring to a social issue which focuses on the different amount of information that is possessed by a user of the internet and another person who does not access the internet. However, the divide is not primarily defined by the use of internet but to most IT devices and media that are in use in the society. Connections to the internet and the availability of digital devices have to be put into consideration when it comes to the issue of digital divide in the society (Van, 2014). Businesses have also enlarged and increased their performance as a result of technological innovations. Many individuals have become obese due to overreliance on digital devices.
