Answer: The first energy releasing reactions to evolve were anaerobic respiration since it takes place without oxygen. Anaerobic organisms were first to evolve before the atmosphere contained oxygen and have survived to present. Anaerobic respiration produces only 2 ATP molecules per cycle which are enough for unicellular needs but inadequate for multicellular organisms. What is the purpose of both anaerobic and aerobic respiration? Answer: The purpose of anaerobic respiration is to use any molecule besides oxygen to turn food into energy that a living biological cell can use. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and converts the molecular oxygen into carbon dioxide which produces more energy per unit food as compared to anaerobic respiration. The body breaks down fat and sugar to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) food Oxygen is absorbed in the process Oxygen is liberated Carbohydrates are oxidized Carbohydrates are synthesized Energy is released during respiration and hence it is an exothermic process. Energy is stored during this process and hence it is an endothermic process. Energy is liberated in the form of ATP Light energy is stored in the form of glucose or chemical energy.
