Name Professor Course Date The Use of Radioactive Elements in Medicine Introduction Radioactive materials surround us everywhere because some occur naturally in the environment. Some radioactive materials are beneficial while others are harmful to the environment and human life. A radioactive element is the one that spontaneously degenerates its nucleus leading to the emission of some three rays to the environment. For instance there are three kinds of emissions released by these elements namely the alpha particle the beta particles and gamma rays. Some of these radiations may react with our bodies and cause skin disorders and infections such as skin cancer or inflammation. The gamma rays contain a high content of electromagnetic energy which is harmful if it gets into our bodies. Some of the naturally occurring materials include radium thorium and uranium metals that are radioactive. Scientists have discovered and incorporated the use of these radioactive elements technology and radioactive elements has saved the lives of many people in the world. The government has to institute proper waste management of such materials to make sure that people do not get infected and most importantly terrorists won't get an opportunity to use such materials to make weapons.
