Retrieved 21 March 2017 from In this article Margarita Tartakovsky discusses an experiment done by Walter Mischel an Austrian psychologist conducted at Stanford University. The experiment which was referred to as “the Marshmallow Study” was not experimenting kids’ desire for sweets but rather the concept of delayed gratification. The study which tested more than 600 kids of the Bing Nursery School showed that few kids ate the marshmallow immediately the researcher left the room of study. While some of the kids delayed for less than 3 minutes before they could consume the marshmallow some tried to distract themselves as much as possible by even covering their eyes so as to wait for the full 15 minutes. The inspiration for while others have bombarded it with numerous criticism. Some critics claimed that his samples are too homogenous or small to be useful in scientific conclusions. Also the critics say that the test measures trust in authority rather than the ability to sit and accomplish a goal regardless of the hindrances. Another concern raised is the assurance or incorporation of trust in the studies to ensure that kids are in a stable environment. Mischel responds to this by ascertaining that trust was an important factor that he always considered and adopted by having a familiar researcher known to the children and how they can easily relate with. Above all Mischel indicates that the study is not purely on the desire of children to eat sweets but rather the correlation of their delay ability with their adult life and how they deal with various situations in their day to day life.
