This has brought into debates the concern over gun ownership in America. A section of people are against gun ownership and want it regulated whereas the pro-gun ownership camp argue that the right to own guns should not be taken away from law-abiding citizens because of a few people. The argument on background checks before allowing possession of firearms has been brought to question. Others have suggested mental health approach since most of the lone shooters often record a background of mental illnesses. The constitution protects gun ownership in the second amendment. Justice Antonin Scalia used this Second Amendment to rule against this law allowing for ownership of firearms. This amendment therefore limits the approaches and strategies the government can implement to tackle the matter.

The Second Amendment was motivated by the fear of a standing army in the 18th Century. The government needs to repeal this section based on the context in which the law was made and the prevailing circumstances which necessitated such an amendment (Charles, 2012). The conditions that required gun ownership by citizens in the 18th century are not similar to the current situation regarding gun use. Such statistics point out to the need of a drastic approach which is rooted in the repealing of the second amendment. However, some critics may argue that repealing the second amendment will not eliminate homicides entirely as there are other weapons. The need to repeal this section of the constitution is due to the extensive gun violence in the country.
