In history, colonization is a common term that is often used. Among the continents that were adversely affected by colonization until recent times in Africa. According to historians, the European imperialists who made their push to Africa were motivated by three main factors, namely, social, economic and political. However, the economic factor was the major reason, which motivated many colonial powers. This is because Africa was rich in resources that could be used in industries (Bahadur). For instance, when the British were rustling replacement workers for plantations globally, they ferried more than one million coolies to different parts of the globe. Further, looking at the response from laborers of different occupations, some who were laborers, they did not use the word coolie (Carter).

This is because plantation managers and overseers used the word to show hierarchy in most estates and in particular to remind their subjects that they were of a lower class. From the above definitions of colonization, it is evident that the subjects being discussed by the author fit in this context. The literary texts uncover essential facts about colonialism. The colonizers were only interested in enslavement, indentured labor, and forced migration. Through literary sources, it is further revealed that some Africans were allowed to work as seamen. Despite the various crew people different races making sexual advances to emigrant women, Africans were given a harsh penalty. For instance, there is an attempt to handcuff stead and Roberts. Crompton and Cloughton were also male seamen that assaulted women sexually (Bahadur).

Most of these works are found in literary works. However, most literary texts also make an attempt to recover the dehumanized experiences and assert humanity (Bahri). For instance, the Indian poet, Singh, in his work urges people to identify with the word coolie. By giving the word new life (coolie), Singh claims people will be proudly identifying with their origin as indentured laborers without any shame. For the emigrants, they got an opportunity for pastime activities and exercises that averted their melancholy (Steele). Through religion, people were able to preach tolerance for one and love for one another. During this time, the role of the state and the church were tied, and thus people felt inclusive and part of the government of the day (Steele).
