THE EVOLUTION OF SOUL MUSIC Soul music which in many instances is simply referred as soul has its origin from the United States. As a genre soul music is a combination of rhythm and blues jazz and African-American gospel. It was developed as a way of expressing the African-American experience and was a key way of emphasizing the black culture. However the term soul is more often used to refer to rhythm and blues or simply RnB which is the most popular category of soul. This genre came into existence in the 1940s and this term ‘rhythm and blues’ was a christening by the recording companies to refer to music which was sold to urban African Americans in a period where jazz music which had a characteristic insistent beat was gaining popularity.
