Initially, an ancient empire ruled the area until the 13th century. In 1820, British began to rule the region, but their rule was firmly established in 1901 after a severe resistance by the Ashanti people. Through a referendum in 1956, Togoland became part of Ghana. On March 6, 1957, Ghana became an independent country and the first independent country in Africa. On July 1, 1960, Ghana became a republic Ghana has a diverse culture with mixed practices and beliefs from various ethnic groups. Ghana has various prominent authors like Ayi Kwei Armah, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, and J. E. Casely Hayford whose book have gained international acclaim. Their books include Ethiopia Unbound 1911 by J. E. Over recent years, Ghanaian and Nigerian casts,” crews and productions are collaborating to make films.

Some of the Ghanaian actresses include Nadia Buari and Jackie Appiah, and actors Van Vicker and Majid Michel have starred in Nigerian Movies and have gained international recognition with millions of people watching their movies. Idris Elba is a global actor, but he has Ghanaian roots. He has roles in many Hollywood movies like The Marvels production Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity Wars. He won the BET Award for Best Actor in 2009 and 2010 among other awards and nominations. The youths created hiplife a new music genre by incorporating Afro-reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop. Some of the Ghanaian artists like Rocky Dawuni who is a songwriter, activist, and an “Afro Roots" singer (Younge, 2011). Also, Rhian Benson and Sarkodie, R&B and soul singer have attained international success.
