The theme of revenge in the cask of amontillado
The story happens during the carnival period, and most people are celebrating. Fortunate was also among the people celebrating dressed on colorful wore hat and a clown. Fortunato was drinking unaware of the plot against him. Montresor baits him to his wine vaults then easily chains him on the wall. Montresor pledges vengeance or rather revenger upon Fortunato after he insulted him. In the statement “ventured upon affront” Montresor takes this factually as an ethical insult which is capital by death. Montresor has general thoughts on revenge. According to Edgar (p. 69), revenge has two traits. The first one it must not be reattributed, which implies that the piece of revenge needs to be unrepressed. Nonetheless, Fortunato has no idea of this either.
