The earliest Japanese people had folk religions. Their religion cultures included beliefs in the existence of nature-gods such as the sky gods agricultural gods and gods associated with weather among others which led to multiple deities. Shinto the religion adopted later at 500 B.C comprised of numerous deities. However the sun goddess was the most dominant on the earth sea and sky. Through the dominance of the sun goddess the sun god culture became deeply rooted in the tradition of the Japanese people. It was widely believed by the Japanese people that they originated from the nature-gods. They of the sun goddess was also known as the son of the grain soul. The rice grains given to the first emperor to be sown on land was obtained from heaven by the sun goddess who wished the land of Japan to be transformed into an agriculture land. Furthermore the sun goddess nurtured the rice grown on land by her rays. Thus the sun goddess became the chief goddess of agriculture while rice became the major agricultural crop grown in Japan.
