Conditions of parole include obeying the law, abstaining from alcohol and drug abuse, securing employment, and maintaining appointments with the parole officer (Shannon et al. Parole was introduced in the United States to manage the population of prisoners as well as for rehabilitation purposes. Statics show that there are twice as many people serving parole terms as those in prison in the United States. Parole rates have grown past the resources allocated to support the initiative. The number of people under parole terms has increased four-fold since 1980. This is a worrying trend considering the high level of corrective mechanisms that have been implemented by the governments over years. The Department of Justice has only updated parole data of up to 2016. Therefore, this is the only available official data.

This suggests that more than one third of people detained in New York prisons annually are readmitted due to parole violations. Parole in the United States is not evenly in the United States. Parole is primarily dominant among African-American and Latinos living in low-income neighborhoods. One out of 12 African-American males is under community parole supervision (Shannon et al. The resources allocated for parole are not adequate to support it. There is need to increase funding to reverse tides. Conclusion The primary objective of parole is to manage prison population and to rehabilitate prisoners.
