Ritualized Girling: school uniforms and the compulsory performance of gender is a peer reviewed article that discusses the manner with which the use of the school uniform policy has an impact on the gender performance especially for the girls. Happel Alison is a gender advocate who has conducted a number of studies especially in relation to the behavior of girls. Thus, she conducted this research and published the results in order to indicate to mist of the public schools the need to adopt the school uniform policy that will enable them to change the behavior of the girls and thus to achieve the intended results. The author reviews many of the other articles that indicate the lack of significant effect of the school uniform in most of the schools.

However, she still maintains that it helps in the improvement of the “overall school environment and student achievement”. By first presenting herself as a gender advocate, she shows the audience that she is the right one to stand on behalf of the girls and to offer what is appropriate and right for them. Besides, she also quotes a lot of the other material that is provided both for and against the use of the uniforms. Pathos is mainly seen when she makes an attempt to convince the audience on the need to make use of the school uniform policy. She not only focuses on the general behavior but emphasizes on the decency especially for the girls. This means that he holds on to the supporting side of the debate. As an adviser on family issues, Kouzmine attempts to show the parents that there are very many benefits of letting their children be in school uniform while in school as opposed to having them wear any kind of clothing from home. In particular, after the mention of each major point, the author provides details as to how the uniforms help0 in the achievement of the point. Not only one point is given under each of the points but a number of them that will convince the audience to make use of the uniforms as opposed to leaving the children choose their dressing every day to school.

There is no use of ethos in this article. However, it is not a major problem as the author clearly indicates that he is a family counselor who not only has the expertise in advising families but also offers them the most appropriate ideas to make their lives better. Pathos is used to a lesser extent to appeal to the emotions of those who are directly related to the uniform issue. In particular, in this article, Abi points out the negative effects that the school uniforms have on the varied aspects of the students. He indicates that the school uniforms are “ridiculously outdated” and therefore do not have any benefits to the students. Therefore, he feels that they should be scrapped from the system.

In particular, for each of the points given, there is an explanation as well as proper examples to support the points. There is less use of ethos though it is not necessary since the author provides expert ideas to help the audience make a decision not to make use of school uniform for the benefit of the students. The use of emotional appeal through pathos is extensively used to convince the audience to do away with the uniform issue. For instance, the idea that the uniform is outdated and uncomfortable is able to convince the reader to take up a more modern way of life that will help in the achievement of the right results.

In addition, by posing the question of “do you think?” (Abi 5) the author offers the audience the opportunity to reflect on the whole issue and thus to come up with an appropriate answer to the school uniform matter. However, just like the constant change of the syllabus, the need to apply the school uniform policy does not in any way help the children to enhance their learning abilities. Instead, it causes a lot of pressure on the children and their parents and does not have a direct impact on their educational activities. In essence, she points out to the fact that this reform is misleading as “uniforms are only found in the poor urban schools where poverty is a factor and less prevalent in the suburban schools” (Bailey 104).

As opposed to the notion that the private schools are doing better that the public schools as a result of the behavior that is enhanced using the uniforms, the author refutes by providing the counter argument to the effect that “private schools may tout uniforms too. But in most private schools, uniforms are about camaraderie and school pride-not behavior control” (105). This shows that in a number of ways, it is not linked to the element of excellence. The author makes an attempt to provide all the points that are related to the need by students to wear and not wear uniform in schools. In this case, it is important for all those who are interested in the subject to consider both of the sides and to make a decision on what would be the best option depending on the points that are presented.
