The failure of enforcing environmental laws has led to increased dumping of waste and toxic substances to the environment. This has led to the contamination of agricultural farms, surface water, and human habitat. Mining waste released to the farms is a threat to the aquatic animals, water pH, ecology, and microbial organisms (Kuppusamy et al, 8). This has led to a decline in the biodiversity of living things. In several countries such as Korea and Romania, agricultural soils have a high concentration of heavy metals from the metal mining sites (Kuppusamy et al, 8). Vegetation in this mine spoil areas has a great challenge since there is no native microflora which is able to transform mineral elements via various biochemical reactions. Genetically modified crops and microbes are being used in polluted sites to clean up the heavy metals such as radioactive waste in an eco-friendly and less costly manner.
