The book begins by introducing us to the life that the two sisters were brought up in having been brought up in North Carolina, and it is in the first chapter that we get to understand the family that the two sisters came from. The two sisters Bessie and Sadie were born in a family of ten where their father was a Bishop of the Episcopal Church and their mother was just an ordinary Negro but hardworking (Hearth 5). The characters of the two sisters are clearly seen in this chapter where Bessie is seen to be a feeling child and Sadie, on the other hand, tends to be obedient and always listening and doing what her mother demands her to do. As small as they were they began to learn of the hatred that existed in their society and this is where Bessie develops a hate for the racists' children who started to hate others at such a tender age.
