Self-conscious emotions can be defined as the feelings that are within a person and those that help them identify with the community as per the perception it holds of them and what they think of themselves. According to an article in Healthline. com, self-conscious emotions are important because they provide a person with a sense of maturity that makes the better suited in dealing with the different situations in the society and therefore, they are aware of the expectations that the community has about them. Emotions are both positive and negative and have different impacts on the various situations in accordance to human activity. In a work environment the emotional phenomena has a role that has broadly worked towards providing the employee and the employer a perspective on the activities and the duties various people should engage in.

In this sense, emotions have been likened to impressions and ideas. According to Hume’s wonderful simile, impressions and ideas are illustrated as the appearance of players at a theater, the moves they make as they pass, glide away and repass across the audience and the postures and situations they are infinitely intertwined within (Hume, 1978). The concept of Hume’s wonderful similes illustrated emotions as sensations characterized by externally reflective strings of attachment. Locke identifies emotions in his own concept as sensations that are constricted within internal factors. Therefore, the concepts of emotions expressed by both Hume and Locke are different, in which Locke perceives them as characterized by ideas of good and evil while Hume’s concept identifies them as caused by impressions of pain and pleasure and other external factors as well.

This definition also helps in identifying with self-conscious emotions; they are formed within a person’s mentality and impact the reactions that a person has on different circumstances. b) Psychological Definition In psychology, emotions are feelings and thoughts that define the behavior of a person. The feelings are associated to self-conscious emotions that are either afflicted negatively or positively. They are inclusive of pride, embarrassment and jealousy among others. c) Philosophical Definition In philosophy, emotions are the different reactions that people have as manifested by their emotional lives. From the different concepts and perspectives shared on the idea and definition of emotion it is clear it is a psychological construct. Psychological constructs are the different skills, abilities and attributes that are established and illustrated within various theories in psychology.

There are different constructs and they include, fear, motivation, and anxiety among others. All these constructs are built on the principles of emotions therefore; emotion is a construct in psychology that identifies different feelings expressed by people, therefore helping psychologists in analyzing and evaluating the various complications within a person as affected by the construct. Constructs according to psychology cannot be observed directly because they exist in a person’s mind. At a work environment emotions play an important role in motivating people, when there is a lot of negativity at the organization, people will experience motivation levels that are low. In this article the author identifies the examples of self-conscious emotions as guilt, shame, embarrassment, and humiliation (Groenvynck, Dillen & Frontaine, 2011).

These emotions help people relate with themselves as well as the community due to the reaction they receive. Despite the various studies on the different psychological aspects and constructs, such as personality, social, development and clinical psychologies, there have been few studies aimed at understanding and evaluating the organizational and industrial psychologies. It’s from this perspective that the authors conducted a research into which they could construct a scale that would be able to measure self-conscious emotion. com nd). The tool that the authors aimed at constructing was focused on providing a scale that could be used to measure and access multiple state emotions. The authors were inclined to using the Discrete Emotions Questionarre (DEQ) as constructed tool to measure the emotions that included anger, fear, disgust, anxiety, sadness, happiness, relaxation, and desire.

These emotions are the eight distinctively identified by previous scolars as discrete emotions. There other tools that have been used to meaure emotion and have been addressed by differenty scolars and journals, they include, Product Emotion Measurement Instrument (PreMo) Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) among others. Scale Development The Self-Concious Emotion in Student Perfomance Scale (SCESPS) will be developed by use of an item pool of 20 items. The scale will be developed in the United States according to the transations made from Sef-Concious Emotions at Work Scale (SCEWS) and the Discrete Emotions Questionare (DEQ) by Groenvynck, Dillen & Frontaine (2011) and Harmon-Jones, Bastian, & Harmon-Jones (2016) respectively. The translations will be made with respect to the various items identified by the discrete emotions theory.

In total, 12 items will be created with an aim of measuring and assessing the the impact of self-concious emotions, and the remaing eight items including anxiety, fear, happiness, sadness, guilt, embarrassment and humilition among others will be borrowed from SCEWS and DEQ tools of measuring emotions. The Self-Concious Emotion in Student Performance Scale (SCESPS) will make an assessment of perceived student performance in its impact on anxiety (5 items, 3 from SCEWS) fear (6 items, 4 from DEQ), humiliation (6 items, 3 from SCEWS and DEQ) sadness (3 items). It will be used on the data gathered from the sample of students to provide a structure for the assessment of the scale constructed. Establsihing Construct Validity Validty for a construct scale created is an important aspect in psychology.
