According to Freud (17), the behavior of a person is dependent on the outcome of the interaction between the three personality mechanisms, that is, the id, the ego, and the superego. The Id mechanism refers to human’s instincts and natural drives, that is, cravings for nurturance, urges, wishes and need for immediate satisfaction. Precisely, argues that instinctual motivation is a consequence of pleasure principle, the impulsive desire that should be satisfied instantly regardless of the outcomes. Regarding drug abuse, demand for pleasure can result in an Id motivated person seeking drugs to satisfy the desire (Corey, 80). The Ego personality develops as one matures, and it involves mediating the Id in impulse control. As part of the training, the programs focus on behavioral change.
