The lead character in the story as created by Charlotte is a young woman who is facing a lot of problems in her life. The story is also narrated from the first-person point of view, and it revolves around some of the issues that a young woman faced in her young marriage.

The first person style used in the story provides a clear overview of the woman's life and what she was going through in her life. Isolation is the key theme that is also reciprocated in this short story. The level of isolation that the narrator faces as the lead subject in the play is quite enormous. She is isolated from the rest of the world just because she is a woman. The character, in this case, is used to represent the plight of women in society. She is used to express how the women are isolated from various key operations and critical points in the community that makes them feel neglected, inferior and also unwanted.
