Eleven by Cisneros illustrates the coming of age and anti-coming of age as the point of view which reveals why Rachel does not see the difference in her ages and further makes it possible to realize why Rachel and her mother behaved like children in some instances. Rachel in the text is coming of age because she was able to learn something concerning herself and the world around her. The story is therefore not just a typical rendition of the genre of focusses on the coming and anti-coming of age. In this case, Rachel did not merely end the story by describing that she grew to be an adult but instead, she learns something new. The story is progressive because Rachel was able to progress from a young child and becomes a more mature kid and despite her inability to complete the whole process, she has been able to take critical steps while growing into adulthood.

According to Rachel, she seemed to be ten years, eleven years and three years at the same time because she cannot tell whether there has been a break in the developmental stages (Cisneros, Sandra, 45). According to the worldview portrayed by Rachel, the progressive anti-coming of age had been remaining the same for many years. When Rachel's mother cried, it is assumed that it was not an adult who was screaming but the three year part of the adult. This gives us a conclusion that even if Rachel grows up to be more than twenty years, she will still be having an embarrassed three and eleven-year-old nature. The point of view further makes the story essential because it describes that Rachel had not been able to transfer her developmental stages from one stage to another.

The claim is therefore critical in explaining the simple acts that adults perform by telling that the little transformation from one stage to another especially from ten years and above. The claim is therefore crucial as it helps to explain why Rachel is ignorant about her birthday. The truth is, she is not feeling the difference in her growth hence making her ignorant. This tells why Rachel needs to be more than one hundred years because it will be easier for her to feel the difference. Having a different point of view as opposed to the one used in the book, might not have revealed the intention of the term eleven as used in the book. The central genre of the writing has directed the movement of a human being from one point of life to another for example from childhood to adulthood.
