Oedipus essay

The play illustrates a lot of pain whereby at the end, however much one resists it happens that their destiny has already been proofread and written. One does not have an alternative in the matter that it doesn’t matter how one is brave or brilliant, the size of the ego doesn’t matter either or the belief that person has at the end the prophecy will be fulfilled. Sophocles tend to believe in the humanity although in this play he tries to outrun that the prophecy bore fruitless effort. In answering the question of the assignment, one has to start at the end part of play since the primary idea of this play narrows down one thing; in a minute person can be in charge of his destiny then in the next minute he is in need of mercy.

“My sister Ismene whom we are born by the same mother, can we have any torment that Oedipus has suffered that Zeus cannot impose on us? There is actually nothing since there is no shame, dishonor, grief or violence and evil that you and me we have yet not gone through. If there is anyone who is aware of the murderer he is supposed to talk right away. Since he will receive an award and also be thanked. ”(Sophocles, pg. At this point, Oedipus is aware of the situation that he is going through but through hubris act, he is playing the prophecy and the lockstep of it. In this Sophocles however brief it is, even if he tries to reinforce the point may it be ego or brilliant it does not go hand in hand with the prophecy.

Even if it was the creation of democracy, involving in all sort of conflicts, being able to survive the dark ages, racing to space or the age of bronze human has felt that fortune has favored him somehow. In a way it has and in other ways it being Napoleon, Oedipus or Caesar in the ‘ides of March’ has been preordained and not able to resist. Sophocles is trying to illustrate this before mentioning of any event that might have ever occurred. In many cases of this play, Sophocles tries to take fatalist perspective by expressing the ego and bravado of king Thebes, who is facing gods of ire and who believes as author of his fate. But Oedipus is able to recognize that he is neither the writer nor the narrator of his fate, but he is filled with ego and claims that he can alter stars as well as bringing up his demise.
