Her home what previously had stood out decent and elegant now stands a carcass in one of the city streets? People in Emily's city gossip and pity her and it gets worse when she starts dating Homer Barron, a worker at a construction company building sidewalks on her street. They soon stop seeing each other, and a witness spots Emily buying an arsenic compound. Before she dies at the age of seventy-four years, Homer is missing. After she dies the city people break through her house sealed for forty years and they find Homer's dead decaying body, a single gray hair and another body imprint besides. "A Rose for Emily" Narrates the tale of nontraditional vs. After he dies, she is left all alone having no idea how the world is fast changing while she is not.

The author explores a strange symbol very tactically in his opening section "A small fat women in black, with a thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt" (Faulkner 147). Completely lost in this new world, she starts dating Baron a construction worker is completely against what her father teachings. She is neither looking to be rebellious or to get back to the old man for shutting her down. She is desperately in love with Homer, and it is not surprising when she buys him a wedding outfit and going forward she wants him to marry her. All pointing in one direction that she is in a cocoon of time, she has no one to look to, and her obsessiveness of having a male in her life led's to her desperate measures including taking a breath.
