The students were expected to read the book one after the other, then state the themes, styles, characters, and so on. The students were very active during the class as they discovered the themes and styles used in the novel. The teacher made sure that every student participated as it was an indication that the students were understanding and concentrating. After reading a page of the novel, students were expected to highlight the themes, styles used in the book. The teacher would then highlight any other information that the students had missed. However, what the teacher was teaching was within the curriculum. By engaging the students, the teacher ensured that every student understood the lesson and consequently passed their examinations. Some of the activities in the school related to high-stakes testing are; an examination after every month to evaluate the students learning.

The tests help to identify weak students and enroll them in remedial classes so that they can improve their score. The test ensure that no child is left behind just like the plan introduced by President George Bush (Ravitch 93). Additionally, the teacher learned whether the students understand the class according to the questions they asked. However, the teacher had to ensure that the questions and discussions in class remained within the context as she had to follow the strict curriculum. Some students would insist on one point, and the teacher had to dismiss such points. Although the teacher seemed to like the construction of her class, she had to follow the curriculum strictly. If I were a teacher, I would respond to these limitations of my autonomy by asking the school management to allow teachers to construct their class the way they want as long as the class remains within context to the lesson.
