Afterward, new groups emerged which included the mestizos, the criollos who had a Spaniard origin, and the mulattos. An ethnic reconstitution which had been instigated by the Indians in the sixteenth century was reborn. However, the Criolos were the primary benefactors of the conquest since they were able to expand their trading routes and precious metals were traded to Spain. Vieceregal officials were selected as the leaders of the provincial capital and the port cities. By the end of the seventeenth century, the population in Mexico had increased by twenty-eight percent between the year 1630and 1700. The increasing dominance of the Indian population offered them protection from other groups like the mestizos and the Spaniards. The king was given the power to protect the Indians since they were regarded as a minority group.
