At the same time, an equal number of 20 other respondents stated that they rarely use Cantonese. A total of 9 respondents said that they use Cantonese sometimes while only 1 respondent declined to have used Cantonese. On the other hand, 28 respondents agreed that they commonly use English in the workplace, 18 respondents stated that they sometimes use English while 4 respondents mentioned that they rarely use English in the workplace. Lastly, 22 respondents agreed that they commonly use Mandarin in the workplace, 18 others stated that they sometimes use Mandarin while 10 respondents mentioned that they rarely use Mandarin in the workplace. From these results, it can be concluded that English is the most commonly used language in the workplace, followed by Mandarin. 6% of the respondents agreed to the second extent that the Mother Tongue Policy affects the status of Cantonese in Hong Kong.

Elsewhere, 9. 4% of the respondents agreed to the third extent, 28. 1% agreed to the fourth extent while 46. 9% agreed to the fifth extent. About the need for preservation, 80% of the respondents said that it is necessary to preserve Cantonese while 20% said that it is not necessary. Those who agreed proceeded to offer the following reasons for their opinions. 3% said that it will help in saving some of the cultural heritage, 56. 4% said it is a way of saving the unique Cantonese expression while 71. 8% stated that it helps in maintaining the cultural identity of Hong Kong. This can be considered as an uninformed decision because the survey clearly designed for Cantonese people. It can be recommended that future surveys should be more categorical and specific. Thirdly, some parts of the survey were conducted in the workplace despite the sensitivity of the topic.

This can be viewed as a breach of ethical regulations in modern society. Thus, it can be recommended that future surveys should be conducted out of work or school if they involve such sensitive topics. From the survey, it was established that 80% of the respondents were impressed with the idea of preserving and promoting the native Cantonese language and culture. Accordingly, these participants managed to raise concerns as to why Cantonese has been underrated as well as the threats facing the language. For instance, unfavorable education policy and immigration from China. However, it is worth noting that the survey has also provided recommendations that can be implemented in order to nationalize Cantonese. That is, the involvement of the government, media and curriculum developers to encourage the use of Cantonese in schools and official meetings.
