To deliberate on this debate, it appropriate to apply the theory of virtue ethics. The virtue ethics theory provides that humans should be guided by appropriate moral characters. This is where the principle of proportionality comes in. Drone killings can be used when it is proportionate to the military advantage. Intentional killing of civilians is not an appropriate moral character (Troop). However, the kind of medical attention accorded to him during his last days before his death raises some ethical concerns (Wilkinson). Mandela was given additional and superior medical service that ordinary people are always denied. According to the deontology theory, it was absolutely unethical to channel massive resources to prolong the life of Mandela at a time when millions of people in South Africa could not afford to receive basic medical care.
