Cairns, Patricia Et Al. "Understanding the International Retail Divestment Process. " Journal of Strategic Marketing 16. The purpose of the research and reasons why the authors undertook- aims and objectives, and rationale It is important to understand the purpose of a research based on the aims and objectives of its author. It is as well crucial to understand the rationale used in the research to investigate the topic of study for the research. It is a rationale that improves the reliability of the research and realizes much confidence in case there is corresponding of the research findings to the research approaches in the study (Creswell np). The epistemological position adopted by the authors of the research Each research design adopts a different epistemological position that would fit the areas and topic of study.

It is, therefore, important to understand the epistemological positions of the two research journals. For instance, Cairns et al (112). employ an interpretive paradigm that seems to largely underpinned by the interpretation and observation throughout the process. These interviews were important in the provision of the study’s insights into the most crucial decisions, considerations, and outcomes at different levels in the divestment process (Rahman 111). The qualitative approach for the study is essential for the research in the sense that it touches the sensitive nature of the topic, especially on the explanations of influences and circumstances that lead to withdrawal decisions from the international markets. Wechner et al. , on the other hand, have extensively relied on the data collection with much focus on the testing of the research theory and testing (125).

The primary significance of their research depends on the statement of the hypotheses. The approach of employing an in-depth interview ensured increased degree of validity for the research through insight, coherence, and richness of the information (Rahman 108). It is evident in Wechner et al. research that surveys and questionnaires have been employed, and it is important to note that they have been used to collect data that is later tabulated and revised, which allows the characterization of the data through statistical analysis (126). Wechner et al. requested about two thousand research participants to engage in the online examination on the topic of study, particularly the delicatessen marketing (128). For instance, Wechner et al. have deductively used the design to test the hypotheses and different theories to examine the relationship between the two variables for the research (127).

There has been a systematic measurement of the two variables for the study, yielding numeric data that have been analyzed statistically. There is measurable evidence in the study, essential for the establishment of the cause and effect, to create a framework that gives room for generalization and replication to a population. Cairns et al. Moreover, the research employed probability sampling which reduces the probability interval error compared to the random sampling. Advantages and disadvantages of adopting quantitative and qualitative research design It is crucial to understand the strengths and weaknesses of adopting the two designs of research. More importantly, it must be noted that both qualitative and quantitative research methods have their weaknesses and strengths, and these were evident in the studies.

For instance, qualitative research has extensively proved more depth in the context and meaning of the study. Its richness is evident in the manner in which it discovers and illuminates. For instance, its strengths include the provision of the necessary metrics to offer the validity and reliability of the research measurables (Bryman 60). As a research method, there are instances where relatively low costs and time can be applied in completing its different methods. It is as well important to note the comparability of the data across different places, groups, and people. It is as well important to note the weaknesses of quantitative research methods as evident in the discussion. For instance, the method of study lacked the depth of context and meaning.

Therefore, the type of study design to use for the study entirely depends on the type of study question for investigation. Qualitative research and data are only applied in the investigation of single cases, and for the evaluation of the people’s feelings and opinions, while quantitative research data is essential in the examination of a large group topic of study such as censuses or clinical trials (Hammersley 41).
