The author employs literary elements such as idyllic imagery and irony to depict the theme of freedom. Freneau had been imprisoned in a British prison ship, where he was serving as a slave for over a year. In the poem he narrates the unrelenting kings of Europe who rule with an iron fist, enslaving the masses. He expresses his joy for landing in America a land he depicts as free with no kings or oppressive tendencies. “the day is near where men oppress no fellow men and reason will prevail, not Kings” (line 52). He is of the view that, once the Europeans arrive they will exploit the unused resources. Freneau is keen to reiterate the exploitative nature of the Europeans. The use of river and lakes are critical since he applies imagery to highlight the greatness that America harbors.
