Participants in such kinds of research, even health care practitioners themselves who are subjects of the study, are all deemed to be vulnerable as long as they take part in the research. Therefore, gatekeepers are not only necessary for protection of participants from scrupulous researchers that do not adhere to ethics, but are an ethical consideration and measure that needs to be put in place in this kind of research. Gatekeepers are also in the same regard holders of similar control and power and have a responsibility towards ensuring the protection of potentially vulnerable persons just like the researcher (W. K. Kellogg Foundation 2006; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013).
