In collective security, states pledge to defend one another as a way to deter aggression or exterminate a transgressor (Hadano, 2018, p43). The idea of collective security has been around for centuries but was first truly utilized after the 1st world war. It has been supported for several reasons and also criticized other rights. The implementation of the idea has, therefore, proved problematic due to the divided support from states across the world. Numerous prerequisites have to be met for the idea to have a chance of working effectively. This idea of collective security is, however, idealistic in nature and scope three different aspects. One of them is the assumption that there could be a complete international understanding of all aggressors and all the nature of threats.

Secondly, it assumes every nation would come forward to name the aggressor and that every other nation would come forward to take collective security actions against this aggressor. Thirdly, these concepts ignore the fact that not all countries are active in international relations (Hadano, 2018, p43). The current dominant concept behind the adoption of the idea of collective security is to establish and strengthen the independence of every nation, whether small or weak. There should be an understanding of the kinds of force and to what extent this force may be used against a state if it threatens the peace of the other nations (Hurrell, 1992, p40). There should be a shared willingness of all countries to act against the aggressor in an equal manner to avoid further disputes and maintain the shared interests (McNair, 2017, p80).

The enforcement of these measures has always been deemed critical, but not in every situation. What collective security needs are the in-depth elaboration of the laws and the standards or mechanisms to administer a fair and efficient adjudication of disputes. Compliance will only be ensured through rationality. Therefore it’s more of their interest to maintain peace (Ikenberry, 2018, p7-20). There are better chances of more purposeful and successful use of collective security today as compared to years earlier. Today, collective security is being operationalized in different parts of the world in a much more effective and efficient manner. It is a modern device and way of managing a crisis.
