I tend to think most Americans are familiar with segregation of the blacks as opposed to the experience of the Mexican Americans because of it was entirely de jure segregation. The author gives examples such as Brown v. Board of Education that led to viewing of the de jure segregation as an issue between White and Black; but not Mexican. For Mexican Americans, it is still unclear if they experienced de jure or de facto segregation. The confusion might have been propagated by lack of attention by the mainstream media, changing racial categorization from time to time, and ignorance by scholars. Anderson provides an in-depth analysis of the ‘achievement gap’ that has long defined the American academic performance with special focus on African Americans.
