” It was majorly used to mean frighten. There are other words that were used in place of afeard. These words were: Panicky, Fearful, Aghast, Apprehensive, ascared and many more. The word is also used to mean nervousness especially when one realizes that something wrong or bad is going to happen. The word afeard is in simple past and past participle form. Juliet explains to him about her feelings and that she is ready to be married by him. This shows the kind relationship that Juliet and Romeo had. Another instance where afeard has been used is in the play by the name ‘The Merchant of Venice’ by Shakespeare in Act one Scene whereby characters were to choose one of the three chest of gold, silver and lead.

The main character was afraid that his lady’s mother had played a false game in the selection. The significance is brought more especially when he shows his timorous among the other characters, and this eventually comes to a reality. It has incorporated the voiceless characters who indirectly helps the main characters achieve their objective. The word ‘afeard’ has stroked not only the readers’ attention but also the listeners’ who also form a certain conclusion depending on how many times that narrator may have mentioned it. Afeard, having appeared in more than six plays by the Shakespeare, it is evident that it plays a bigger role in the entire plays. Therefore, there are many variants of it at different aspects of the play scenes.
